Looking for a DJ? Need a roof fixing? Or how about a photographer? I all probability you will thumb through your local telephone directory and make a few calls, describing what you need to each potential supplier. Well if you live in the USA there is an alternative in the form of Respond.com. This neat little service does all the chasing for you and its free to buyers as Respond take a commission from the businesses they generate leads for.
Here’s how it works. [Read more]

A great little business idea thats taken off. Liftopia is a website offering deals on ski lift tickets.
Here is the pitch. Resorts want you to ski or ride more often. Because you are willing to commit in advance to specific days, and know that you can’t cancel your booking once it is done with, Liftopia makes it safe for our resort partners to offer exclusive deals through our site. This way resorts can try to get more folks out on the slopes, without hurting their on-mountain prices. The term in the industry is “incremental purchases”, which essentially means that with better deals for specific days, you will want to ski or ride more often than you would otherwise.
All the resorts are North American but if the model is good it will either expand to Europe or will be copied in Europe!

As a regular flyer one of my pet hates is checking-in. First of all you need to turn up a couple of hours before your flight (some flights require 3 hours). Then by the time you get to the front of the line all the decent seats have been taken. Even if you get a good seat outbound, chances are you will get the naff aisle seat by the rest room on the return. So from now on I think I will make use of what looks like a promising airline check-in service.
CheckMeIn offers to take the pain away from flight check-in by doing all the leg work for you. Its simple and cheap. Before your flight, and before check-in opens, you go online and enter your flight details and pay them €7 per flight. The you sit back. When check-in opens, the folks at CheckMeIn will check you in and grab the best seat available. You can choose to have your boarding pass emailed to you, or faxed through to your office or hotel, or even collect it at the airport.

A two year old company first established to connect wine bloggers to merchants is branching out. Triggit is a toolbar that makes it easier for website owners/bloggers to grab content such as images, videos and links, and place it on their pages. It also makes it easier to link a particular product mentioned on a site to a particular merchant who can suppl it - great for affiliates. The Toolbar edit options are very basic, enabling users to add images (Flickr), videos (YouTube), and a bunch of affiliate links to your site (Amazon, Commision Junction, Shopping.com, Snooth, Wine Searcher, and Wine Zap). No doubt this functionality will extend with time.
It remains to be seen just how Triggit will make any money as a business though. Other than the standard Web2.0 model of relying on vastly inflated valuations and hence an exit, getting users to part with hard earned cash will be difficult. One to watch though.

One of my greatest pet hates is marketing speak. I cannot stand the buzz-word infested drivel garbage they come out with. I am sure marketeers dream it up just to hack everyone off.
Just close your eyes for a moment and picture it. A bunch of marketeers (collectively known as a ‘crap’) sitting in a pure white office, on pure white easy chairs. A six-foot tall red lava lamp gently bubbles in one corner of the room, and hanging on the wall is a white canvas bearing the imprint of a childs hand - symbolizing the innocence of non-marketeers in a complex world. Today our crap of marketeers is having an ideas session for a website ‘About Us’ page. [Read more]
